ReviewTerminal Summary

Livingstone Brown delivers exceptional client care and positive outcomes for many clients, particularly in abuse redress and personal injury cases, but faces serious concerns around case management delays, communication failures, and potential conflicts of interest that have caused significant financial and emotional harm to some clients.

What customers love

  • Staff professionalism and emotional support, especially team members like Charmaine Ciancio, Kevin Pike, and Elizabeth McAlpine who are praised for compassion, responsiveness, and dedication
  • Successful case outcomes and compensation awards, with clients expressing gratitude for achieving results they could not have obtained alone
  • Clear communication and regular updates throughout cases when properly managed

Common concerns

  • Extreme delays in case progression (7-10 years cited), with documented periods of no work on files for months, causing mental strain and financial loss to vulnerable clients
  • Inadequate case management, poor preparation, and failure to communicate critical information such as court dates, leaving clients uninformed about case status and outcomes
  • Conflict of interest handling and withdrawals at critical moments, combined with financial incentives appearing to prioritize legal aid over client representation

Manners

As the widow of a client of theirs, I only had communications briefly with two members of their paralegal/assistant staff. The first person seemed to assume we were on matey terms which, given the circumstances at the time, I considered inappropriate, disrespectful and unprofessional. The other, some 16 months later, was obviously ill-informed but sent a letter, threatening legal consequences, anyway. Having added insult to injury, in neither case did my correspondents get back to me to explain, to clarify, or to apologise. I don't know whether that was just bad manners on their part, or lack of appropriate policy and supervision within the firm.
